For a bit of fun I've been following the political party result predictions in Clark's previous safe Labour seat of Mt Albert. See the above picture for the odds offered so far.
This by-election will be interesting to follow and will help set the political scene for the rest of the year. Labour must feel reasonably comfortable in winning the seat, however it remains to be seen how much the other parties can eat into Clark's impressive 10,000 vote margin. Anything less than a 5,000 majority for Labour this time around must be seen as a defeat.
The bloggersphere has been awash with commentary about the by-election and it would appear the the VRWC (Vast Right Wing Conspiracy) has landed the biggest punches so far. They have claimed that not only was Labour's candidate, David Shearer "parachuted in" ahead of other incumbant Labour Party hacks, but actually lost the floor vote in Labour's selection meeting.
The biggest hit against Shearer would appear to be the VRWC's early prediction that Shearer would in fact stand for Mount Albert and uncovering that Shearer apparently supports the privatisation of some aspects of the military. The VRWC bloggers mischieviously endorsed Shearer, a man whose asperations would "appear" to be to the right of National!
