The Great New Zealand Motel
I find the differences in the evolution of the motel product between America and New Zealand fascinating (see my previous post here). Motels have gone down very different pathways in the two countries.
In New Zealand, we are very self conscious that the world-view of "Motels" is not very high. We fear that "Motels" may be pervieved by our overseas guests as lowly doss houses that are are suitable backdrops for tacky B-grade movies. We fear that "Motels" may be seen as establishments of ill repute, teaming with crack cocaine and prostitution.
In reality, the New Zealand motel industry offers a quality product that is unique by world standards. The motel apartment concept is soon appreciated by the overseas traveling public as it has been taken for granted by our domestic travelers since the late 1950's. New Zealand motels are typically smaller low rise properties that average 15 units. The people behind the counter own the business and provide a personalized hosting experience.
Compared to hotel style accommodation, motel units are are generally larger, better equipped and you can conveniently park outside. The self-contained units are serviced daily and are suitable for self catering.
I believe that we are over self conscious about what perceptions our overseas travelers may have of the term "Motel" and their supposed misunderstanding of what the motel offer is in New Zealand. Our overseas guests will quickly find out what the locals already know - motels are good quality, convenient and value for money.
The self discovery of motels by our overseas guests (particularly as they travel to the provinces) is an important experience. The under-sell and over-delivery of the motel product is a unique marketing concept that has worked well over the years. Word of mouth and the Internet ensures that our overseas guests are very much aware of the accommodation choices available, before they arrive.
New Zealand has taken ownership of the term "Motel" as part of our enduring collection of unique Kiwiana icons. We should be proud of what we offer, as the quality motel experience is firmly entrenched in the great New Zealand road trip.
