The short-term commercial accommodation market has taken a financial hit.
Figures from Statistics New Zealand show total guest nights dropped five percent in September on the same time last year. The trend has been decreasing since October 2007.
Motel Association chief executive Michael Baines says it is not surprising given the economic climate and July, August and September are normally the quiet months anyway.
Mr Baines says the sector is remaining optimistic and the market has already started to pick up with the warmer weather.
